Peter A. Pickett (aka Pappy and Papa P), a man of deep faith, joyful energy, enduring strength, and a larger-than-life presence, passed away peacefully on August 25, 2026, following a courageous battle with cancer.

Born on April 5, 1947, Pete grew up in Schulte, Kansas, where his lifelong knack for bringing people together—and playing legendary pranks with his siblings—first began. A proud Veteran, Pete served honorably in the U.S. Army. Demonstrating the extraordinary grit and work ethic that defined his life, he later earned both his undergraduate and master’s degrees as an adult while working and raising their young children.

A natural mentor and leader to kids and young adults in every arena he entered. Throughout his distinguished career, he excelled as an electronics engineer, worked in construction, and earned numerous awards as a premier facilities-maintenance leader and business professional. Driven by a desire to lift others up, he taught night classes at local colleges for many years, guiding countless students and young professionals along their paths.

Pete lived life with unmatched enthusiasm. Over 50 years ago, he founded the annual Gunzelman Family Reunion, a tradition that endures today. He dedicated decades of service to Neighbor for Neighbor, helped start the local Oklahoma IFMA chapter, played Santa Claus, donated blood, and raised money for special causes. He was also a Past Grand Knight (2008–2010) for Council 6478 and a member of the Fourth Degree (Archbishop Salatka Assembly 2044), which is the Patriotic Degree of the Knights of Columbus.

Pete loved playing guitar, classic rock, air shows, Deadliest Catch, frisbee golf, and keeping treats in his pocket for the neighborhood dogs. A builder at heart, he crafted "Pappy’s Whirligigs" alongside his son, Peter II, and brother, Jim. He fiercely cheered on OU, OSU, Notre Dame, and Army football, loved taking his grandkids on ICEE runs, enjoyed poker nights and casino trips, and cherished simple moments holding the hand of his beloved wife, Debbie.

Peter was preceded in death by his devoted wife of 57 years, his partner in life, love, and countless adventures, Deborah Jo Pickett, and his parents, Frank and Helen. His spirit lives on through:

- His Children: Lori (Sean) Rourke, Tony (Michelle) Pickett, Christy (Robert) Chatham, Kathy (Steve) Aslin, Paul (Jamie) Pickett, and Minoo (Brandis) Jalal. They carry forward his strength, his strong values, and his love and delight for family and friends.

- His Grandchildren: Sam, Zach, Dylan, Peter, Ashleigh, Lexi, Andrew, Tori, Daylen, Luke, Luca, and Eliana, who were his pride and joy and frequent subjects of his many proud stories.

- His Great-Grandchildren: John Paul and Abel, who will grow up hearing of the incredible man he was.

A formal Mass will be held to pray for Peter and celebrate his strong faith.

Peter and Debbie Pickett’s ashes will be interred together alongside his father, Frank B. Pickett.
