Obituary

Michel’s influence shaped a generation and a community. Arriving from France in 1979, he brought with him not only classical training, but an unwavering belief that Oklahoma City was ready for something more—more craft, more warmth, more soul at the table. What began with work behind bars and in modest kitchens quickly evolved into leadership at larger venues, where his vision and business acumen flourished. In time, Michel encouraged his younger brother Alain to join him in opening La Baguette Bistro, a cornerstone of authentic French cuisine that has served Oklahoma City for decades and remains a testament to their shared passion and perseverance.

Michel was, above all, a lover of life and family. He had a rare gift for making everyone feel welcome, seen, and valued. His generosity was boundless. He donated his time and talent to fund-raising meals, local charities, and community benefits that touched every corner of the city. He championed local artists, proudly displaying their work on the walls of his bistro long before such collaboration was widely embraced.

His leadership within the hospitality industry was equally profound. Michel helped establish the Hirst Hospitality Awards in 1995, serving as co-founder, member of government affairs and nominating committees. He joined the Oklahoma Restaurant Association in 2000, later serving as chairman in 2012, and was honored with the ORA Distinguished Industry Leadership Award in 2017. Yet titles and accolades never defined him. Michel’s true legacy lives in the moments shared, the family he nurtured, the friendships he formed, and the lasting mark he left on Oklahoma City’s cultural landscape.

Michel is survived by his mother, Suzanne Jeanne Buthion; brothers Daniel Buthion, Alain Jean- Pierre Buthion, and wife Anne; his children; Michael Everett Buthion and wife Shannon, Meghan Ellen Lemmings and husband Curtis, Daniel Jacques Buthion, and Pascal Jean Alain Buthion. Michel was blessed with five grandchildren: Brayden, Bryce, and Beckham Buthion, Bennett and Madeline Lemmings. He has two nieces, Sophie and Audrey Buthion. Michel is also survived by his beloved companion, Karel Elizabeth Ford.

Beyond his immediate loved ones, Michel is remembered and loved by extended family and friends from around the world, including Les Frères du Mercredi, fellow restaurateurs, colleagues, clients, staff, and chosen family who shared in the daily pattern of a life built on hospitality, generosity, and friendship, whose lives he touched and who will carry his legacy forward.
