Albert Waintroob

d. January 30, 2009

January 30, 2009, our country lost another member of the greatest generation.  Albert Waintroob, born in Chicago, March 5, 1918, one of five children to Russian immigrants, proudly served during WWII on the initial invasion of Okinawa, as well as time in the Philippines and New Guinea.  After the war, Al returned to Oklahoma City to marry Mary Lee Robinson.  It was a marriage of 40 years.  Al was a shoe merchant opening Waintroob's Shoes in Capitol Hill, later joining Emmer Brothers.  Life gave Al the opportunity to care for the love of his life, Mary Lee, until her death in 1985.  Al returned to the world of retail joining Gordon Brothers and travelled the U.S. liquidating various stores.  At 79, Al retired, but a new career was born.  Al became a writer.  He wrote novels about the war that incorporated his real life adventures, but his true passion was children's stories and was so proud when his book "When Santa Lost Christmas" was published.  Last December Al moved to Town Village where he would 'hold court' every morning while he worked the crossword puzzle.  Al is survived by his only daughter, Sherry K. Barton, two granddaughters, Diane Barton and Barbie Greer and her husband Bill, and two great-grandchildren, Jake and Maddie.  Special thanks to Helen Bake for her friendship and caring ways, to Dr. Elwood Williams for his kind words and compassionate spirit, and to Dr. Phil Adamson and Susan Quisenberry for their care.  Daddy, Gramps, Al, you will be missed.  In lieu of flowers contributions can be made to Chabad, the Jewish Federation, Emanuel Synagogue, or the charity of your choice.  To send flowers or a memorial gift to the family of Albert Waintroob please visit our Sympathy Store.
